Part Three of Presentation Assignment

Prepare a PowerPoint (PPT) presentation to your chosen topic Note, if you do not wish to continue the project (meaning you want Exam Three to count twice), you do not need to complete this assignment. There is no set number of PPT slides required, but it is important to be complete and comprehensive in the presentation. Formatting An opening slide with your name, class name and number, and date of submission Use suggested Template Your presentation should follow the format you used in your outline The Speaker Notes on a final slide titled “Resources” should reflect appropriate citation of all resources. (I will allow any citation form—APA, Bluebook, MLA, but citation form must be consistent.) Remember you are the “presenter” and, as such, you will be reading your Speaker Notes the same way you would a presentation paper. (The “narrative,” which is a clear, complete explanation of the content and points you are making, goes in the Speaker Notes). The audience will be looking at the slides which should include highlights and illustrations of your comments for that slide. The slide content should align with the narrative in the Speaker Notes.

See tips below on creating an effective PP presentation. Video: Death by PP Five Principles to Optimize PowerPoint.docx

Five Principles to Optimize PowerPoint

1.      Use one message per slide.

  • 90% of what you say is gone within 30 seconds when there is more than one message on the slide.
  • Working memory is limited.  Consider David JP Phillips’s example of looking at your ticket an average of six times for your seat number.  The working memory (short term memory) has limited capacity.
  • Audience will pick one message and avoid the other.
  • We are limited to understanding more than one message; keep it simple to one.

2.      Avoid sentences while you are talking.

  • If you have text sentences and speak at the same time, your audience will remember neither.
  • Use PowerPoint to enhance—as it is supposed to be used.

3.      Use size to steer focus.

  • Our attention is drawn to moving objects, signaling colors (red, orange, yellow), contrast rich objects, and big objects.
  • Your headline is often not the most important information, so do not make it the greatest size.
  • The most important part of your PowerPoint should also be the largest.

4.      Use contrast to steer focus; use dark backgrounds.

  • Use the contrast feature to have the audience focus on the important text on the slide.
  • A white background draws the audience to the slide, instead of the speaker. Thus, use a dark background.
  • You want the speaker to be the most contrast rich focus. The speaker is the presentation and PowerPoint is the visual aid.

5.      Limit the number of objects to six per slide.

  • The cognitive process of counting takes more resources than just seeing.
  • Seven or more objects takes 500% more cognitive resources for your audience to understand what is in your PowerPoint.

The United States Refugee Admissions Program (USRAP) Consultation and Worldwide Processing Priorities Pg 242 in immigration book | Good overview | Refugee Processing Center (RPC)

This is the agency that oversees refugees admissions

Every year, immigration law requires that Executive Branch officials:

  • review the refugee situation or emergency refugee situation.
  • project the extent of possible participation of the United States in resettling refugees.
  • discuss the reasons for believing that the proposed admission of refugees is justified by humanitarian concerns, grave humanitarian concerns or is otherwise in the national interest.

Following consultations (discussions) with cabinet representatives and Congress, a determination is drafted for signature by the President. The Presidential Determination establishes the overall admissions levels and regional allocations of all refugees for the upcoming fiscal year.

No refugees may be admitted in the new fiscal year until the Presidential Determination has been signed.

It is made up of 3 other agencies WIKI

  1. DOS: Bureau of population, Refugee and Migration (PRM) Congressional Documents for Congress (PRM) GIS | Archived Biden Archives GIS "10" more Archive from 2008
  2. Department of Homeland Security: USCIS

Refugee Act of 1980: It raised the annual ceiling for refugees from 17,400 to 50,000, created a process for reviewing and adjusting the refugee ceiling to meet emergencies, and required annual consultation between Congress and the President. The Act also changed the definition of “refugee” to a person with a “well-founded fear of persecution,” a standard established by United Nations conventions and protocols. It also funded a new Office of U.S. Coordinator for Refugee Affairs and an Office of Refugee Resettlement and built on already existing public-private partnerships that helped refugees settle and adjust to life in their new country.
